Happy Halloween!

Hello all,

What horribly, haunted, hooligans we had at our Halloween parade today! The display of costumes across the grades was spectacular. The guessing game of faculty costumes at All School Meeting was comical, and a we all had a great time. I wish everyone a very safe and enjoyable Halloween tomorrow!

SBS fifth graders are well into their Independent Daily Reading (I.D.R.) books. They are making connections to their books and recording them on sticky notes. In addition, we continue to explore informational text and how to use text features. Your child should be reading at least twenty minutes a day. I am encouraging them to make sure that it's happening in a quiet place, free of distractions. I would appreciate if you could reiterate this at home!

In writing, we are working on short stories. We have explored different types of beginnings that we can try out with our stories. Some students are opening with vivid description of setting or character. Others are beginning with a question or dialogue. We're looking at different books in our classroom library to examine the types of beginnings used by different authors.

In All School Meeting on November 4th, four SBS fifth graders will present poetry they've written and published in class. These poems, in the form of odes, are on our blog. Matthew, Sam, and Cody have taken the plunge to share with our school. If you can be at All School Meeting that day, please come to cheer us on! We want to share with the whole school community, what magnificent and amazing writers we are!

Have a great weekend,
Laura
