October 8, 2010

Hi everyone!

We had a great week wrapping up our first mathematics unit, which was review, with an assessment.  Students studied and reviewed with enthusiasm and commitment.  I am so proud of them.  We also stretched out thinking in different directions with Ken Ken puzzles.  These brain teasers help to develop mathematical resilience.  Students tried, retried, retried and SOLVED their first Ken Ken puzzles and the pleasure on their faces once they figured them out was priceless.  You can find them in their Trappers.

In Social Studies we have begun to examine colonization.  We discussed reasons why colonies were created and what conflicts might have arisen because of them.  Students worked in pairs to imagine an area of the school they wanted to colonize.  They explored how this could be met with resistance by natives who already inhabited that part of the school.  We will look at historical reasons for colonization and then begin a unit on Jamestown Colony, which I saw in person this summer!  I think it's time to get my pictures (the hundreds of them) off my digital camera and into a slide show.  This will be my weekend project.

In Framing Your Thoughts we've reviewed subjects, compound subjects, and series of subjects (and comma placement).  We'll review predicates next week and practice writing complete sentence in FYT journals.

Orton-Gillingham groups met this week.  Mrs. Donahue and Mrs. O'Brien are working with me and this allows us to make small groups.  We can individualize more effectively this way and keep our pace moving as efficiently as possible.  We will balance our lessons so we are addressing decoding and encoding.  Spelling becomes a focal point in OG in fifth grade.  You can expect to see OG homework beginning next week.  The repetition that OG homework provides is an important piece of the approach.

I hope you all enjoy your Monday off!  Tuesday is Pizza Day.  A reminder that there is no school on Teacher-Parent conference day.

See you all soon I hope.
Laura
